Sparkwell Publishing is seeking submissions for a horror anthology series for kids ages 8-12.
The series will be called Darkside. Each book in the series will feature a collection of standalone stories connected by a theme. The first book, One Last Ride, will explore the "Darkside" of carnivals and fairs.
What we're looking for:
We're seeking original stories between 2,000-3,500 words that fit the theme of carnivals and fairs. The stories should have age-appropriate scares. This is the same audience as the Goosebumps series, so the stories should focus more on supernatural occurrences, monsters, creatures, creepiness, that type of thing. Definitely not things that could happen to kids in real life, like kidnappings, etc.
The stories need to be both creepy and fun. This means the endings cannot be bleak or devastating, but they can be unsettling.
Example of a bleak ending: The main character's family member is taken by a monster and is never seen again.
Unsettling ending: The main character and her friends escape the monster, but the monster might still be out there, terrorizing other kids.
Submission guidelines:
- Word count: 2,000-3,500 words.
- Author must be at least 18 years old.
- Stories must be original and previously unpublished. This includes websites like Reddit.
- Max of two story submissions per author (standalone stories only).
- Authors must be willing to make reasonable revisions to accepted stories.
- ABSOLUTELY NO AI SLOP. Kids deserve better than that.
Rights
We are looking to acquire first publication rights (stories that have not been previously published anywhere, including online) and an exclusivity period of 12 months following publication. After the exclusivity period is over, rights will revert to the author, but we will retain the rights to continue to sell the anthology in all its forms.
How to submit:
Please email the following to [email protected]:
- The complete story as a DOCX file.
- A brief synopsis of the story in the body of the email.
The email subject line should include the name of your story followed by the word DARKSIDE. This will ensure the email gets filtered to the correct email folder, otherwise it will NOT get read.
Payment:
The author will receive $75 per accepted story + one contributor copy.
Timeline:
The submission deadline is December 15, 2026. Accepted authors will receieve an email 1-2 months later, depending on how many stories we have to go through. The goal is to publish the book in the summer of 2027.
Please feel free to ask us any questions you have by filling out the form in our contact page.
